Pipe
Ordered by nominal size (NPS / NB) and schedule. The outside diameter is fixed for each size; the schedule sets the wall thickness, so a heavier schedule means a smaller bore.
Example: 2" NB Sch 40 = 60.3 mm OD × 3.91 mm wall
Stainless steel, duplex, super duplex, carbon steel and alloy steel pipes and tubes — with the grades, chemistry, mechanical properties, schedule chart and tolerances you need to specify them, all on one page.
Pipes and tubes are where Ashok Metal & Tube started, and they remain the heart of our business. We supply welded and seamless pipes, tubes and U bend tubes in stainless steel, duplex, super duplex, carbon steel and alloy steel — and in high nickel alloys, titanium, copper, brass and aluminium when the service calls for them.
Every length is identified by its heat number and supplied with a mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1 or 3.2. When your project needs independent verification, inspection by your nominated agency is carried out at our stock point before dispatch.
The words are often used loosely, but a pipe and a tube are sized, toleranced and specified in different ways. Getting this right avoids the most common ordering mistake.
Ordered by nominal size (NPS / NB) and schedule. The outside diameter is fixed for each size; the schedule sets the wall thickness, so a heavier schedule means a smaller bore.
Example: 2" NB Sch 40 = 60.3 mm OD × 3.91 mm wallOrdered by its exact outside diameter and wall thickness, in mm, inches or gauge (BWG / SWG). Tolerances are tighter, because tubes must fit tube sheets and transfer heat predictably.
Example: 25.4 mm OD × 1.65 mm (16 BWG) wallHow a pipe or tube is made decides where it can be used. These are the four types we supply, and what each is best at.
Pierced from a solid billet, then hot-finished or cold-drawn. There is no weld seam anywhere in the wall.
Formed from strip or plate and welded along the length, by electric resistance (ERW) or electric fusion (EFW) welding.
Precision tubes ordered by exact OD and wall thickness, with tight tolerances and a clean bore for heat transfer.
Straight heat-exchanger tubes cold-bent into a hairpin "U" to your drawing, for U-tube bundle exchangers.

The austenitic 300 series covers most process piping. Stabilised and high-temperature grades, the super-austenitic 904L and the ferritic and martensitic 400 series complete the range.

Values are shown for reference and follow the ASTM specifications named in each table. Limits are revised from time to time, so the edition of the specification on your order, and the mill test certificate supplied with the material, always govern.
Two numbers explain most grade decisions: how much load the material carries, and how well it resists pitting. The full minimum values are in the table below.
MPa · minimum required by the ASTM pipe specification
Duplex grades carry more than twice the load of 316L at the same wall thickness, which is why they allow thinner, lighter pipework.
Typical values · PREN = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N
The higher the number, the better the resistance to pitting in chlorides. A PREN of 40 or more is the usual benchmark for seawater service.

* For carbon and alloy steel, the required elongation depends on wall thickness and the type of test piece; API 5L calculates it by formula. The figure shown is for a standard longitudinal test. Actual test results are reported on the mill test certificate.

Reading the chart: Sch 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S are the stainless steel schedules of ASME B36.19M. Up to NPS 10, Sch 40 is the same as STD and 40S; above that they differ. Likewise, Sch 80 matches XS and 80S only up to NPS 8. Sizes above NPS 24, up to NPS 48, are supplied on request.
Enter any size, or click a value in the chart above. Works for tubes too.
kg/m = π × (OD − WT) × WT × density ÷ 1000

Heat-exchanger and instrument tubes are ordered by outside diameter and wall. The wall is often given as a Birmingham Wire Gauge (BWG) number; the lower the number, the thicker the wall.

Always state whether the wall is a minimum wall or an average wall. A minimum-wall tube can only be thicker than the stated figure; an average-wall tube may be slightly thinner or thicker. Other diameters and metric walls are supplied on request.
A U-tube heat exchanger needs only one tube sheet, and its tubes are free to expand with heat. We supply U bend tubes made from seamless or welded heat-exchanger tube, bent to the radius and leg length on your tube-bundle drawing.
Standard tolerances from the ASTM general-requirement specifications. Tighter tolerances can be agreed when you order.

Tube tolerances shown are for seamless cold-finished tubes. Welded and hot-finished products differ; the product specification on your order governs.
Cut square and deburred. Used with socket-weld fittings, couplings and for tubes.
Machined to a 37.5° bevel to ASME B16.25, ready for butt welding on site.
NPT threads to ASME B1.20.1 or BSP, for screwed fittings on smaller bore pipe.

| Service condition | Typical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| General process, water, food & dairy | SS 304 / 304L | Good all-round corrosion resistance at the lowest stainless cost. |
| Chlorides, coastal & chemical plants | SS 316 / 316L | Molybdenum resists pitting where 304 would fail. |
| Seawater, brine & offshore | Duplex 2205 · Super Duplex 2507 | High PREN and strength; resists chloride stress-corrosion cracking. |
| Sulphuric & phosphoric acid | 904L · Alloy 20 · Incoloy 825 | High nickel, molybdenum and copper for reducing acids. |
| Wet chlorine, mixed acids, flue gas | Hastelloy C276 · C22 | The broadest chemical resistance of any wrought alloy. |
| High temperature, 600 °C and above | SS 321 · 347 · 310S · Inconel 600 | Stabilised or high-chromium grades keep strength and resist scaling. |

This guide is for orientation only. Final material selection depends on the full service conditions and the governing design code, and remains the responsibility of the design engineer.
Every lot is traceable to its heat number and leaves with its mill test certificate. These tests are arranged when your order calls for them.
A pipe is ordered by nominal size (NPS or NB) and schedule. It carries fluid, so the bore is what matters. A tube is ordered by its exact outside diameter and wall thickness, to tighter tolerances. It is used where heat transfer, fit or precision matters, such as heat exchangers and instrumentation.
Seamless pipe has no weld seam, so it is preferred for high pressure, high temperature and critical service. Welded pipe is made from strip or plate. It is more economical, comes in larger diameters and thinner walls, and performs well in most moderate-pressure service. Your design code or project specification usually decides.
Schedule is the wall-thickness series defined in ASME B36.10M and B36.19M. For a given pipe size the outside diameter stays fixed, so a higher schedule means a thicker wall and a smaller bore. The S schedules (5S, 10S, 40S, 80S) apply to stainless steel. See the pipe schedule chart.
316 contains 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, which improves resistance to chlorides and pitting. 304 does not. L grades have lower carbon, which protects corrosion resistance after welding. Most stainless pipe today is dual certified, for example 316/316L, meeting the chemistry of the L grade and the strength of the standard grade.
Every lot is supplied with a mill test certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1 or 3.2, traceable to the heat number marked on the material, along with any additional test reports ordered. When third-party inspection is called for, the agency's inspection release note is included. More on our quality & inspection page.
